The Manitoba Historical Society presents a 19 December 1832 letter written by Thomas Simpson (at Red River):
According to the letter (to James Hargrave at York Factory), the unknown object (elliptical shaped, emitted firey sparks, flew with a velocity of a horse on the gallop) was observed by the bishop and other credible witnesses in various parts of the settlement.
