Article to Media: 2016 Cattle Mutilations

For the past 30 years I’ve been investigating different types of paranormal events, ranging from UFO sightings, Bigfoot sightings, ghost investigations, and entity sightings, but the most troubling of all my investigations, are Animal Mutilation deaths. Mostly cows here in the United States, an estimated 10,000 cattle have been killed due to unexplainable circumstances since 1967. Out of all the cases since 1967 that have been investigated by law enforcement agencies, no one has ever been caught, no human evidence has ever been associated with the killings, as a matter of fact, no evidence has been found determining who or what is responsible for the animal’s death! Since law enforcement agencies can’t determine how the animal died, which includes being killed by another animal, they generally classify these cases as Animal Cruelty cases assuming a human must be responsible for the act. The problem is, the lack of animal or human intervention evidence, so that’s where I come in, a UFO/Paranormal Field Investigator. These cases, in my opinion, are the largest Animal Cruelty Cold Cases if not in the US, but the World, and I’ve placed the task upon myself to try and find the evidence needed to solve these cases.

First, what determines an Animal Mutilation classification? Mostly the unexplained cause of death determined by the rancher themselves, the unusual surgical-like cuts found on the animal, and sometimes the strange balls of light seen flying in the area before or after the animal was found dead. Oh, and then there’s the occasional un-marked helicopters that are sometimes seen in the area after the mutilation has taken place. In 2016, we’ve had at least eight cases across the US that I’m aware of, so here are some examples:

July 13th, 2016 Northwest Colorado:
The rancher found an adult Black Angus female estimated four years old, weighing 1000 pounds, lying dead on her left side. The right side of her head was stripped of flesh from just beneath the eye down to the lower jaw bone. The tongue was cut out and no signs of bleeding-out were noticed. There were no signs of cause of death, and no signs the animal struggled to survive. It appeared the animal was just placed there.

September 1st, 2016, I was contacted by a rancher in Nevada who lost two animals in August.

Animal 1, August 25th:
A five year old female Beefmaster approximately 1100 pounds was found lying on her left side with severe cutting on her right facial side, missing tongue, and anal area cored out. There were no signs of cause of death, there was no blood pooling around the animal, and no signs the animal struggled to survive. It appeared the animal was placed at the location it was found.

Animal 2 August 31st:
A 16 month old Beefmaster Bull approximately 1000 pounds was found lying on his left side with similar damage compare to the previous mutilation. Severe precise cutting on the right facial side, tongue missing, but also perfect cookie cutter incisions in the scrotum area. No signs of either human or animal predator evidence was seen nearby both animal’s locations, but the week of August 25th, strange balls of light were seen 15 miles North of the ranch.

A group of four balls of light were spotted flying in a straight line formation traveling towards the East. One year prior in 2015 in the late fall, a large ball of light was seen by the rancher hovering over one of their fields. The sighting lasted 6 to 7 minutes when the single ball of light split into multiple balls of lights, and shot off in the night sky, towards the West.

September 28th, 2016 Wisonsin:
I was contacted by a rancher located in Wisconsin about a strange animal death on their property. The rancher found one of their cows, a four year old, 1100 pound female Holstein lying dead on her left side. Once again compared to the other previous noted rancher’s animals, this one had similar facial lacerations on the right side from just below the eye, clean-cut down to the lower jaw line. The tongue was missing and there was no signs of cause of death or large amounts of blood pooling nearby. This animal was facing towards the West and showed no signs of struggle and appeared to have been placed at that location. No scuff marks, no kicking, no signs of bullet holes, claw marks, nor even cow footprints leading up to the carcass at that location.

Within a couple of weeks, that same rancher lost four more animals, and the local veterinarian couldn’t find the cause of all their deaths! There more to this story too, but unfortunately I can’t discuss it publically. Let’s just say someone else was interested in these deaths.

Eight unusual animal that I know about occurring last year, and generally for everyone I find out about, I learn that wasn’t the first time it’s happened to that particular rancher, or in that particular area. Most of these events happen in groups of three or four and within 10 days of each other, but not generally at the same location or same state! I’ve had a mutilated case here in Colorado, then within three days later an animal mutilated case was reported coming out of Missouri! Unusual? What’s even more unusual, sometimes these mutilations happen on the same latitude, or more recently, The 37th Parallel.

What’s common with all these cases?

Besides the unusual cuts and lack of cause of death, most animals are found lying on their left side, and facing in an Eastern-Western direction. Why? I have some thoughts which I’ve learned over the years, some may think they’re crazy, but the most important thing is the animal deaths. Over the years cash rewards have been offered by many organizations and ranchers looking for the culprits, but with no results. So it’s up to me and others like me, to create public awareness about these cases in hopes of gathering new evidence which will eventually lead us to the who, what, and why. Until then, well it’s stays a mystery, a very horrific one.

Alexander Hamilton and the 1897 UFO/Cattle Mutilation Incident

Did Alexander Hamilton one of the Founding Fathers of the United States personally experience a UFO sighting which escalated into one of our first documented cattle mutilation case?

( Yes this story is not new, but it’s still interesting, fun, and worth mentioning. )

On April 23, 1897, the Kansas, Farmer’s Advocate published a story about a phenomenal event experienced by one of our most phenomenal Founding Fathers in US history, Alexander Hamilton.

After the article was published, it was re-printed in newspapers all over America and Europe. In his book “ANATOMY OF PHENOMENA” by researcher Jacques Vallee back in 1965, Jacques brought this article into the media lime light. Later in years some publications including Fate Magazine concluded the event was a hoax due to Alexander Hamilton being part of an elite group of citizens known as “The Liars Club”. Their information came from a 1943 article from a Kansas newspaper called, “The Buffalo Enterprise”, in which Mrs. Donna Steeby of Wichita Kansas wrote that her 93 year old mother, Ethel L Shaw when younger, had actually heard the tall-tale from Alexander himself and he admitted it was all a hoax.

Hamilton had signed an affidavit, notarized by 10 notable members of the community of LeRoy, Kansas, where they lived. The affidavit was dated April 21, 1897, and Hamilton staked his “sacred honor” on the truth of the event.

Not to discredit Fate Magazine or Ethel Shaw, but let’s look at Alexander’s tale and then compare it to what happened in the general area of Kansas last year, December of 2015 and the beginning of this year, January, 2016. First the Hamilton’s case:

Source: The Great Airship Mystery: A UFO of the 1890s, Daniel Cohen. publ. Dodd, Mead, 1st ed. 1981, ISBN-13 978-0396079903, Chapter 7, pp.92-102.

“Last Monday night about 10:30 we were awakened by a noise among the cattle. I arose thinking that perhaps my bulldog was performing pranks, but upon going to the door saw to my utter astonishment that an airship was slowly descending upon my cow lot, about forty rods [600 feet] from the house.

“Calling my tenant, Gid Heslip, and my son Wall, we seized some axes and ran to the corral. Meanwhile the ship had been gently descending until it was not more than thirty feet above the ground and we came within fifty yards of it.

“It consisted of a great cigar-shaped portion, possibly three hundred feet long, with a carriage underneath. The carriage was made of glass or some other transparent substance alternating with a narrow strip of some material. It was brightly lighted within and everything was plainly visible-it was occupied by six of the strangest beings I ever saw. They were jabbering together but we could not understand a word they said.

“Every part of the vessel which was not transparent was of a dark reddish color. We stood mute with wonder and fright. Then some noise attracted their attention and they turned a light directly upon us. Immediately on catching sight of us they turned on some unknown power, and a great turbine wheel, about thirty feet in diameter, which was revolving slowly below the craft, began to buzz and the vessel rose lightly as a bird. When about three hundred feet above us it seemed to pause and to hover directly above a two-year-old heifer which was bawling and jumping, apparently fast in the fence. Going to her, we found some material fastened in a slip knot around her neck and going up to the vessel from the heifer tangled in the wire fence. We tried to get it off but could not, so we cut the wire loose to see the ship, heifer and all, rise slowly, disappearing in the northwest.

“We went home but I was so frightened I could not sleep. Rising early Tuesday I started out on my horse, hoping to find some trace of my cow. This I failed to do, but coming back in the evening found that Link Thomas, about three or four miles west of LeRoy, had found the hide, legs and head in his field that day. He, thinking that someone had butchered a stolen beast, had brought the hide to town for identification, but was greatly mystified in not being able to find any tracks in the soft ground. After identifying the hide by my brand, I went home. But every time I would drop to sleep I would see the cursed thing, with its big lights and hideous people. I don’t know whether they are devils or angels or what; but we all saw them, and my whole family saw the ship, and I don’t want any more to do with them.”

Analysis of the Story:

The description of the craft mimics airships of that time period, the first flown by Henri Giffard’s in 1852 which was steam powered. What’s interesting about this story is how it’s very similar to today’s sightings:

Description:

“It consisted of a great cigar-shaped portion, possibly three hundred feet long.”

Cigar-shaped UFO’s are still being seen today. As of this writing, The National UFO Reporting Center has eight listings so far in 2016 from Seattle, Washington down to Eagle River, Arkansas with two separate sightings reported in Joplin, Missouri. There’s over 2500 Cigar-shaped cases reported on this website.

Animal Mutilation:

The Airship picks up a cow, and then cow parts were found three to four miles west of LeRoy and appeared to have been dropped due to leaving no tracks in the soft ground.

If that story wasn’t enough, in Volume 38, No.11 of Fate Magazine’s issue, November of 1985, was printed a story called, “Cattle-Killing UFO of 1896”. One year before Alexander Hamilton’s story, in August of 1896 in Howell County, Missouri, a family experienced a UFO encounter.

Excerpts from the Fate Magazine article:

– “All at once we saw flashing lights. At first we thought they were a star shower, but the “stars” stayed in a circle as if they were all strung together like beads.”

– “The circle of lights just kept whirling and falling towards us.”

– “ I ran to my mother and clung to her skirts, crying and shaking so hard that I could barely stand.”

– “ It stopped and hovered over the barn. We could now see it was a large saucer-like shape. It’s lights were blinding. The whole barn lot lit up like day.”

– “My father grabbed up the baby who was sleeping on a pallet and we fled into the house.”

– “The next morning when Ben took his dog Cappie and went out to the pasture to bring up the milk cows, as he always did, he came running back to the house scared out of his wits.”

– “In a large patch of burned grass were three of our steers lying dead on the ground.”

The father then examined the steers and noticed they were completely drained of blood.

Note: For a complete version of the article, please contact Fate Magazine and request, Volume 38, No.11, 1985 issue.

Real Animal Mutilation cases consist of the following:

– Animal is picked up at location A, then mutilated at location B, then placed at location C.
– Animal found with usual lesions, and lack of blood.
– Animal appears to have been dropped or placed.
– No animal struggle evidence found.
– No predator take-down evidence found.
– No human evidence found.
– No tracks of any kind!
– Sometimes strange lights are seen in the area before and even after the mutilation.

So we have two possible mutilation cases occurring in 1896 and one in 1897. Both talk about a purposed UFO and both sightings result in cattle deaths. But wait, there’s more to this.

  • Hamilton mutilation location, occurred around 38.062278, -95.725157
  • Missouri mutilation location, occurred around 36.969949, -91.892627

On December 21st, 2015, KWCH News 12 out of Kansas, reported a Newton, Kansas rancher found one of his bulls dead a quarter of a mile into his pasture on the 18th. The animal’s sex organs had been removed. The Harvey County Sheriff’s department investigated the incident and found no traces of cause of death and is classifying this as an Animal Cruelty case or non-animal related.

On January 2nd, 2016, the Harvey County Sheriff’s department’s Facebook page stated another cow has been found dead in McPherson County, Kansas, its eyeballs had been removed and other similar damage mimicked the Newton case.

Let’s look at the location of all four cases:
2015 Newton, Harvey County, Kansas mutilation 37.966629, -97.390411
2015 McPherson County mutilation 38.217891, -97.662204
1897 Leroy, Coffey County mutilation occurred around 38.062278, -95.725157
1896 Howell County Missouri mutilation occurred around 36.969949, -91.892627

Include my investigation case from December 2015, posted on this website January 3rd of this year:
2015 Miller mutilation, Trinidad, Colorado 37.235617, -104.363306

“They all appear to be on a linear pattern mimicking my 37th Parallel or Paranormal Highway Theory.”

Food for Thought:

Numerous publications state Alexander Hamilton’s mutilation case was an elaborate hoax due to him being associated with “The Liars Club”. Gentlemen creating fantastic stories for sport, the winner being the one who’s story becomes the most popular in the media. But… I’ve found no evidence at this time Alexander Hamilton admitted guilt in his own hand writing, only that Ethel Shaw had heard the tall-tale confession from Alexander himself when she was a lot younger. Hamilton did sign an affidavit about the event and at that time was practicing law in Leroy, Kansas.

Conclusion:

Obviously there’s been a lot of research by good people on the Hamilton Airship case and the overall consensus is, he indeed lied. But what if he didn’t? How accurate is the second hand witness testimony, it’s just circumstantial evidence which allows for more than one explanation. Did he lie, or did he in fact experience an experimental Airship stealing one of his cows? Or.. did he see something else? And what about the Howell County Missouri event a year earlier? Two events occurring a year apart from each other, a state apart from each other, with similar out comes; Cattle dying. And why are similar events still happening today in the general location?

Coincidence? Maybe, but then again, maybe not so coincidence.

Colorado Cattle Mutilation 12/13/15

????????????????????????????????????

On Sunday December 13th, I was contacted by the Miller Ranch near Trinidad, Colorado, about a possible cattle mutilation. Two 1100 pound female Red Angus’s went missing, one was found dead with unusual wounds and the other was found alive, but with internal injuries. Due to the conditions of both animals, the rancher decided to investigate further to determine if in fact a mutilation had taken place. The following couple of days after the 13th, the rancher and I stayed in contact trading information. After December 15th the rancher informed me that he had to put the second animal down due to its injuries.

The following is my investigation.

On December 13th after the rancher counted his herd of roughly 60 animals, he found that two were missing, both females possibly pregnant. After searching an area where the herd was last seen, he found one animal dead lying on it’s right side with unusual cuts and the second animal about 30 feet away lying on its right side, struggling to get up. Both animals were at the bottom of a small steep-sided gully or arroyo. Having had multiple mutilations in the past, the rancher was suspicious of both animal’s conditions.

Animal 1, the dead one, had flesh removed around the jaw, the tongue was missing, the left eye and socket had been cut out, the left ear had been cleanly cored away, there was a gaping hole in the neck area down through the shoulder showing separated ribs from the back bone, the left shoulder was contorted and out of place as if the animal had been dropped, the udder was cut out, and the anal area was cored out too!

Note: No mass amounts of blood were originally seen by the rancher around the gaping hole in the neck down to the body cavity, just a massive open wound.

Animal 2, the alive one, showed no apparent physical damage, but couldn’t stand up due to some type of internal physical injury. After moving the animal a short distance trying to get it to walk and caring for it, the decision was made to end the animal’s suffering by using a 22 caliber gunshot to the head.

The rancher exhausted all possibilities of Animal 1’s death including falling the short distance into the gully area, and the damage being done by scavengers, before the decision was made to contact me again about a possible mutilation. At that point in time, the animal had been dead too long for any type of sample taking, so a decision was made to perform an experiment.

This is what we know:

– We know both animals went missing the same time.
– We know one animal was found dead with unusual damage resembling the standard mutilation scenario.
– We know one animal was found alive nearby with some type of internal injuries.
– We know the approximate death of both animals, Animal 1 around 12/12 and Animal 2 on 12/15.
– Animal location, 37 degree latitude.

The Experiment:

If Animal 1 had died of natural causes and the unknown strange damage was due to scavengers, then we could use Animal 2 as a test case and see if similar damage appears due to scavenging. The decision was made to wait until after Christmas giving us 15 days after Animal 2 was put down and run a comparison analysis between the two animals. Here are the results.

Investigation 12/30/15:

????????????????????????????????????

UFOnut Team Member  Matt Morgan at Mute site.

12/30/15: Investigative team member Matt Morgan and I drove from Colorado Springs to Trinidad, Colorado, and met with rancher Miller.

Animal 1 possible mutilation found 12/13/15:

– 1100 pound Red Angus (female)
– Animal lying on right side facing North to South.
– No traces of radiation.
– Constant 8 to 10 microtesla reading pinging highly in abdominal area.
– Magnetic sweep showed nothing.
– No signs of struggle in soil.

Animal 1 Damage:

– Missing eye and surrounding area of socket.
– Missing tongue.
– Large smooth cut around jaw line.
– Left ear cut out in circular fashion.
– Open cavity wound neck to mid-section displaying neck and back bone and ribs.
– Ribs cage separated from back bone.
– Left front leg twisted at shoulder bone.
– Missing udder section.
– 8 inch hole in anal area.

Animal 2 put down by rancher on 12/15/15:

– 1100 pound Red Angus (female)
– Original location 30 feet south from Animal 1 facing East to West, lying on right side.
– Animal appeared to have internal injuries, signs of struggling.
– New location, 25 feet north of Animal 1 lying on left side.
– Animal died by 22 gunshot wound to the head.
– Blood seeping through open mouth.
– No traces of radiation.
– Sporadic 8 to 10 microtesla reading pinging low in abdominal area.
– Magnetic sweep showed nothing.

Animal 2 Damage:
– Scavenger damage seen around mouth where blood was seeping, non-smooth chewed bite marks.
– No other damage seen.

Comparison Analysis:

Animal 1: Missing eye, eye socket cored out,
missing tongue, smooth cut around jaw line and missing ear (not shown).

Animal 2: Eye and ear present, scavenger chewing around mouth.

Animal 1: Flesh stripped from neck behind ear to mid section
exposing rib cage.

miller4 rotate

Animal 1: Rib cage separated from back bone.

Animal 2: No damage to neck.

Animal 1: Udder cut out, anal cored out.

Animal 2: Udder still present, anal area intact.

Investigative Conclusions:

  • Animal 1 and Animal 2 shared similar abrasions around the jaw area. Comparing the two, more intense precise cuts were noticed on Animal 1 when the rancher originally found it compared to Animal 2’s scavenger gnawing fifteen days after being put down.
  • Animal 1’s rib cage was separated from the back bone. Upon closer examination, a large rock was lying beneath the animal’s back bone and could have caused the rib separation but only due to traumatic blunt force against the rock. This could only have happened if the animal was dropped from a great height.
  • Animal 1 had shown no signs of struggle, no dirt scuff marks, and no vegetation damage was seen due to falling or rolling down the slight incline. The animal appeared to have been placed there.

Animal 2: At this time the animal’s internal injury is unknown. Was it part of the event Animal 1 was subjected to but survived with injuries? Due to the circumstances and out-of-pocket expenses, a veterinarian was not contacted to run a necropsy. As the animal deteriorates, the rancher will keep an eye on the carcass and look for any internal bone damage that the animal may have originally sustained.

Interesting Information:

On December 21st KWCH News 12 out of Kansas,  reported a Newton, Kansas rancher found one of his bulls dead a quarter of a mile into his pasture on the 18th. The animal’s sex organs had been removed. The Harvey County Sheriff’s department investigated the incident and found no traces of cause of death and is classifying this as an Animal Cruelty case or non animal related.

On January 2nd, 2016, the Harvey County Sheriff’s department’s Facebook page stated another cow has been found dead in McPherson County, Kansas, its eyeballs had been removed. The owner of the cow had told KSN news Kansas, that the veterinarian who performed a necropsy found an injection site.

I’ll try to get more info on both mutilation cases.

The 37th Parallel Theory:
Trinidad, Colorado’s mutilation sits right on the 37th degree latitude, Newton County, Kansas mutilation falls within the 37 degree latitude, and the McPherson County, Kansas mutilation falls just into 38 degrees latitude. These mutilations appear to have been heading East along the 37th Parallel.

Odd Happenings in Southern Colorado

On October 31st, 2014, The Pueblo Chieftain newspaper, of Pueblo Colorado, printed the following article. Thanks to the writer Jon Pompia, for taking the time to get this valuable information out to the public.

October 31, 2014 9:40 AM
Jon Pompia The Pueblo Chieftain, Colo. (MCT)

The bizarre mutilation of cattle.
Black helicopters shining spotlights into homes.
Unidentified flying objects in both the day and night.
Lights that follow vehicles.
Earthquakes in regions that never before experienced them.

Something odd is going on in Southern Colorado, and renowned UFOlogist and cattle mutilation investigator Chuck Zukowski has a theory as to why.

The Colorado Springs researcher and host of the UFOnut website recently appeared on the Science Channel’s “Unexplained Files” series to present what he terms the “37-degree latitude theory.”

Research into unexplained phenomena across the U.S. unveiled that an abundance of these events occur in a linear pattern — which starts in Virginia and extends west through Southern Colorado — along the 37-degree latitude line.

This 3,000-mile stretch was dubbed “The Paranormal Highway” by Zukowski for the simple reason that many things not so simple to explain are happening with great frequency along it.

“The 37-degree latitude theory was a starting point to try and understand why most cattle mutilations in Colorado occur in a particular location,” Zukowski said.

As he began to study other anomalies — mutilations, UFO sightings, shallow earthquakes — across the country, Zukowski noticed that the 37-degree latitude appeared to be the center of this line, with the left and right lanes converging into 36 and 38 degrees. This forms what he calls “The Paranormal Highway.”

Central to Zukowski’s theory is his belief that underground drilling associated with subterranean military bases — not fracking — is responsible for a rash of shallow earthquakes, several of which have hit the Trinidad area in recent years. On occasion, UFO sightings follow these quakes.

This underground drilling, Zukowksi believes, also may be producing the infamous “Taos Hum” — an unusual droning sound long heard by north-central New Mexicans.

“My 37-degree latitude theory eventually matured into more of a Paranormal Highway, which encompasses underground bases, military structures, caves, some sacred Native American sites, UFO crashes and other very interesting sites like Fort Knox, Area 51, and a little higher up the 38-degree latitude, the Pentagon,” Zukowski said.

Strangeness in Southern Colorado:

Theories aside, there is no doubt that strange things are taking place with great regularity in Southern Colorado.

And one of the most perplexing — Zukowski labeled it “absolutely ridiculous” — happened in August in the La Veta area.

Between Aug. 8 -17, eight cattle deaths were reported to the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Department. Two of the deaths occurred on one ranch and the other six on a ranch about 2 miles away.

Every animal exhibited the “traditional” signs of a mutilation: reproductive organs and tongues removed with surgical precision, massive blood loss with no visible sign of the blood, missing flesh along the jaw line, no signs of struggle and so forth.

According to an article published in The Huerfano World Journal newspaper, on Aug. 17 a 14-year-old girl spotted 12-15 unidentified objects in the sky near the mutilation site. These saucer- shaped objects, which flashed red, blue and white lights, were also observed by the girl’s parents.

Three days later, during the evening, one of the ranchers whose animals were killed observed an unmarked black helicopter flying over Cucharas Canyon, slowly heading south.

The next evening, the rancher’s house was inexplicably lit up with bright lights. Running to the door to investigate, the rancher saw four large helicopters hovering within 100 feet of his house. These units were flying side by side, slightly staggered, and were using powerful spotlights to sweep the ground in an apparent attempt to locate something, according to published reports.

A neighbor, a former naval aviator, also observed the black helicopters, thus confirming the rancher’s testimony.

On what may or may not be a related note, The Huerfano World Journal newspaper reported that six months before, the sheriff’s department was contacted by the Denver-based FAA Air Traffic Control in regards to an unusual occurrence.

Commercial airplanes flying 32,000 feet over Huerfano County reported being hit by an industrial-level laser. The FAA provided deputies with the location coordinates of the reported laser strikes. A subsequent investigation uncovered nothing unusual — other than the fact the coordinates given are just over a mile from where the August mutilations occurred.

‘Not of this Earth’:

“Whatever is doing it is not from Earth,” said Weston rancher Mike Duran, no stranger to cattle mutilations and UFO sightings. “No predator would be able to take apart any animal with such precision.”

Duran has not only lost cattle through mutilations but has, in both day and nighttime, observed unidentified objects in the sky near his home west of Trinidad. One of these sightings was captured on camera.

“When we blew the picture up, we realized that we had caught the UFO in motion, spinning,” said Duran. “It’s what UFOlogists call the ‘pearl effect.’ ” Duran also related the strange tale of a neighbor, who told him an unexplained light followed his vehicle as it traveled up Colorado 12 from Trinidad.

“It was nighttime and he saw a bright light by the river,” Duran said. “He thought it might be hunters . . . until the light started to travel right beside him.”

As the light followed the frightened man’s car along the highway, his original thought that it might be a helicopter vanished once he determined no sound was audible. This was nothing more than a white globe of light, albeit one with some sort of intelligence.

At the end of his frightful journey, the man was able to get a photograph of this light. When blown up, the photo revealed the light to be a cigar-shaped object, with a pair of exhaust-like stacks on it.

As to the rash of Southern Colorado cattle mutilations that continues unabated — Trinidad-area rancher Tom Miller has been especially hard hit over the past 15 years — Zukowski said human involvement has all but been ruled out.

“Since 1967, when the mutilations first started, law enforcement has looked for human evidence in an attempt to explain them. And to this day, they’ve failed to find any such evidence.”

Zukowski believes that the animals are somehow picked up, taken to another location, cut up and drained of blood, and then dropped back near the pick-up site.

But why, however, seems to be the more perplexing question.

Multiple Animal Mutilations! Eight Cows Dead in Walsenburg, Colorado.

CATTLE  MUTIALTION  INVESTIGATION:

Walsenburg_mutes
13 miles northeast of Walsenburg between August 8th and August 17th, eight cattle deaths were reported to Huerfano County Sheriff’s department. 2 animal deaths were reported from one ranch, then 6 more were reported from another ranch 2.2 miles away. All eight animals mimicking standard animal mutilation characteristics.

Note: Some information for this report was pulled from the Huerfano World Journal article: Cattle Mutilations in Huerfano County, August 28th, written by reporter, David Perkins. The majority of information was gathered by me, investigating the sites, talking with local ranchers, their relatives, and also interviewing law enforcement personnel. Multiple attempts to contact reporter David Perkins through the Huerfano World Journal to validate claims in his article were unsuccessful. I had to validate his article’s claims by investigating and talking to the individuals myself.

RELEASE OF INFORMATION

The following information is from my investigative notes.

First Set of Mutilations
Ranch One: (Private Land) Friday, August 8th, two Black Angus Steers were found dead in the morning.

Ranch1
Undersheriff David McCain investigated these animals. He had investigated three other mutilated cows in October 1994 belonging to rancher Ermenio Andretta near La Veta, so he was familiar with this type of incident.

Statistics:
– Reed Ranch: 90,000 acres.
– Previous Mutilation: 1985 cow mutilated on leased land near Yellowstone Road, near La Veta. (Udder missing)

Investigation 09/04/2014: – Damage to both animals was the same:

Ranch1a

Interview with rancher
– No signs of struggle.
– No signs of predator take-down evidence.
– No signs of predator tracks.
– No signs of massive amounts of blood loss.
– The rectum was cored out.
– The testicles were cut out in a perfect circle.
– The penis was cut out in a perfect circle.
– The tongues were cut out.
– Both animals were missing 1 inch by 6 inch flesh along the jaw-line.
– Animals appeared to have been placed at their current location.

My investigation:
– Both steers were 26 months old.
– Both carcasses were facing towards the West.
– Both animals were originally found lying on their left sides.
– Cow 1 and Cow 2 were 40 feet away from each other.
– Dew Claws were missing on front and back legs.
– Radiation check: Animal 1 (.00050 mR/hs )
– EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field check): Animal 1 (4-6 micro-teslas)
– Radiation check: Animal 2 (.00100 mR/hs )
– EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field check): Animal 1 (6-8 micro-teslas)
– Magnetic sweep Animal 1 and 2: No signs of metallic substance in or near body.
– No signs of ground impact or soil cratering.
– Both animals were free grazing.
– Both animals were in good health.
– Average age: 26 months each.
– Average weight: 1100 pounds each.
– Average worth: $2500 each.

Full Spectrum Camera Video Analysis:
– No apparent abnormalities.

FullSpectrum

Possible Ground Anomaly:

Ranch1_ground_anomoly
200 yards south-west of both carcasses an oval ground anomaly roughly 8 feet in diameter was noticed. The rancher didn’t see this before the animals were mutilated. Radiation and EMF checks yielded no results. Due to weathered contamination, soil samples were not taken. The rancher will keep an on it.

Second Set of Mutilations
Ranch Two: Reed Ranch ran by Robert Wolf

Ranch2

( Picture of one of the four Heifers, taken by; A. Sample Jr. )

1 Cow Death : Saturday, August 9th, Dennis Thompson neighbor to Robert Wolf informed Robert he had found a dead cow near the Thompson fence line. (Huerfano World Journal article.)

4 more Cow Deaths: Saturday, August 16th, Robert Wolf found four cows lying dead near each other by a fence line near a county road leading to his house.

– Robert called Huerfano Sheriff’s department, and Deputy Clint Boehler was dispatched to the scene. The Deputy classified the event as “Animal Cruelty”. Animal Cruelty is a misdemeanor charge but in multiple cases, it can be charged as a felony. (State of Colorado)

– Sunday, August 17th, veterinarian Terry Root from Fowler, examined the animals. Cuts were made around the jaw-line to examine the missing tongues, and it was determined they were cut out in a surgical fashion. Biological samples were taken for toxic analysis to try to determine death.

1 more Cow Death: Sunday, August 17th, while Robert Wolf was checking on the remaining animal’s midafternoon, he found another dead Heifer.

Sunday evening 8:30pm, August 17th, a 14 year-old girl spotted 12 to 15 unidentified objects in the sky towards the east and yelled for her parents. They all saw objects that appeared to be moving then hovering together. They were flashing red, blue and white lights and appeared to be circular-type saucer-shaped. The objects were moving toward the northeast and disappeared behind the clouds. (Huerfano World Journal article.)

Total of 6 cows were found dead on the land managed by Robert Wolf from Saturday, August 9th through Sunday August 17th.

Investigation 09/04/2014:

Ranch2a

Information from eye-witness Rancher:
– Average weight, 700 lbs.
– Tongues missing with precise cuts.
– No signs of massive blood loss.
– No signs of struggle.
– No signs of predator tracks.
– No immediate coyote damage.

My Investigation:

– Cow 1 (1180 feet) from Cow2 (168 feet) from Cow 3 (111 feet) from Cow 4.
– Four 1.5 year old Heifers.
– Cow 1: Was moved from original location near Cow 2 for Vet convenience. The body was originally pointing towards the west and lying on its right side.
– Cow 2: Laying 10 feet away from a fence-line, the body was facing towards the west lying on its right side.
– Cow 3: Laying 6 feet away from a fence-line, the body was facing towards the northwest lying on its right side.
– Cow 4: Lying approximately 60 feet away from a fence-line. The hide had been pulled from the skeleton by scavengers, so original direction and placement was undetermined.
– Cow 5 and Cow 6: Due to time constraints and private land location with no permission to enter, they were not examined. Injuries undetermined.

All Four Animals yielded these same results:
– Radiation check: (.00050 mR/hs )
– EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field check): Animal 1 (4-6 micro-teslas)
– Magnetic sweep Animal 1 and 2: No signs of metallic substance in or near body.

Cow2 appeared to have had its Dewclaw removed.

Ranch2_dew_claw

A “dewclaw” is an unused digit on many mammals, birds, and reptiles. It generally grows high on the leg on hoofed animals. There’s no nutritional value for scavengers and is generally left to decompose. With some of my animal mutilation cases, the dewclaw has been removed. Unknown reason.

– Wednesday evening, August 20th, Robert Wolf saw a black helicopter with no markings flying over Cucharas Canyon slowly heading south. Military helicopters do fly from Fort Carson near Colorado Springs and the Pinon Canyon site, so fly overs are common but usually during the day time. (Huerfano World Journal article.)

– Thursday 12:30am, August 21st, Robert Wolf’s house was lit-up with bright lights. Running to the door, Robert saw four large helicopters hovering within 100 feet of his house. Flying side by side but slightly staggered, they were using powerful spot lights sweeping the ground as if looking for something. (Huerfano World Journal article.)

Interview with one of Robert Wolf’s neighbor: (Name on File.)

2nd Generation rancher, his family homestead the area in 1922. The neighbor was unable to see the mutilated animals due to poor health, but on August 21st, 12:20am, he also heard then saw, military helicopters hovering near the mute area, thus confirming Robert Wolf’s testimony to the Huerfano World Journal article. This witness was a former Naval Aviator.

Interview with Huerfano County sheriff’s deputy. (Name on file)

On a Friday March of 2014, the Huerfano County sheriff’s department dispatch was contacted by Denver FAA Air Traffic Control and was informed some commercial airlines were reporting being hit by a laser while flying 32,000 feet over Huerfano County. FAA also informed the sheriff’s department that pilots reported getting hit with a laser a week before. Coordinates were given to dispatch for investigation. Deputies were sent to the FAA coordinate location multiple times day and night, looking for the cause of the laser strikes. No evidence of an industrial laser was spotted, no evidence of any type of ground or air vehicle were seen. The coordinates given by the FAA Air Traffic Control was 1.5 miles away from the August mutilations. This is still an active investigation.

Note: One of the investigative deputies was prior DOD trained on laser technology which qualified him to handle this particular type of investigation. He knows what to look for.

Summary:

– Rancher Robert Wolf was out-of-town and not available for interview.
– Undersheriff David McCain was on vacation and not available for interview.
– Release of Records Information was filed by me through the Huerfano County Sheriff’s department requesting additional information.
– Undetermined if Huerfano County Sheriff’s department has received results from veterinarian Terry Root’s toxic lab analysis.

This is still an on-going ACTIVE investigation.

(FYI) In case some of you are wondering, “Yes” these mutilations occurred on 37 degree latitude, “The Paranormal Highway”.

Mystery of the Dying Elk: The Unexplained Files

On Tuesday, July 29th 10:00pm Central time, the Science Channel premiered its second season of, “The Unexplained Files”. Their premier episode, “The Real Exorcist and Mystery of the Dying Elk” I thought was pretty good! Of course I may be biased because I had a segment in the Mystery of the Dying Elk episode. Numerous times throughout that episode I was seen stating the mysterious elk deaths may be UFO related. There’s a good reason for this, and this following blog explains why. If you have any comments, please express them at the end of the blog, and as always, all comments are welcomed good or bad. (thank you)

Summary:

On August 27, 2013, a hunter on a 75,000-acre ranch north of Las Vegas, New Mexico came upon a most grueling site, more than 100 elk lay dead among the trees. With no immediate or apparent cause of death, officials with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stepped in to take a look. Initial investigations ruled out common causes of death from predators to poachers to lighting, so on-site necropsies were soon followed.

1. 113 Elk lay dead in close proximity.
2. No immediate signs of death were determined.
3. The animals showed signs of struggling before death.

Kerry Mower, investigator for New Mexico’s Department of Game and Fish, visited the area looking for an answer. He checked for the following:
1. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD): This is a hemorrhagic untreatable disease spread by insects.
2. Anthrax: A disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis which can be found in soil which is digested by animals through ground feeding. Very deadly to both animals and humans and used in biological warfare.
3. Water sources: Samples were taken from a natural water source and two separate cow watering troughs.
Note: Blue green algae was located in the water of the troughs which could create a neurotoxin which would be deadly to the elk, but no neurotoxin evidence was found in the water, or in the animals or even their droppings.

Out of all the checks Kerry Mower did and the lab analysis results he acquired, no direct evidence could be linked to the elk deaths; Yet the New Mexico Game and Fish department issued a statement “Toxic Algae Bloom” was responsible for their deaths even though no evidence was ever found. Why?

Interesting Facts:
1. The average size of an elk is around 500 pounds.
2. The average amount of deadly neurotoxin to kill and elk is around 3 ounces.
3. The average size of a rancher’s cattle trough can hold 100 to 500 gallons of water if plastic and 2000 gallons of water if a fiberglass model 20 feet long.
4. 113 elk lay dead all together not spread out while a herd travels.

Enter the UFO Investigator.

pond

(Water source near area, but not on private ranch.)

Blue Green Algae was found in cattle watering troughs but not in a natural water source pictured above. Here’s the problem I have with the neurotoxin scenario.

 1. No neurotoxins were found in any water source or found during animal lab analysis.
2. If the water was poisoned, then 113 (500 pound elk) would have to drink from both cattle watering troughs at the same time to become poisoned at the same time. That’s 56,500 pounds of animals drinking from two 20 foot by 4 foot watering containers in a very short period of time.
3. All the animals needed to drink at the same time to enable them to die at the same time to be found in one location.
4. For all the animals to die at the same time, they would need to have equal body weight and equal body digestive metabolisms.
5. No other animals were found dead due to any water poisoning, Deer? Squirrels? Birds? Nothing! No other animal lives in that area?

Game and Fish Departments reasoning? Ok get ready for this:
The neurotoxins created by the Blue Green Algae have a very short life span, thus after the bacteria dies, it leaves absolutely no trace in the animal or in the water, ever, ever, ever, ever. Really?

Well between July and August of 2004 in Arusha, Tanzania, at least 16,000 Pink Flamingos were poisoned due to neurotoxins in blue-green algae in Lake Manyara. Direct correlation between the toxins and the bird’s deaths were found not only in the water, but in the animal’s carcasses and their droppings as well. Hmm the toxins can be found in a 6 pound Flamingo but not a 500 pound Elk?

Alert! Unusual anomaly also found in news video footage:

Something very interesting was seen in the released news video, a crop circle like pattern off in the distance.

elk_circle1

(Picture courtesy KRQU via YouTube screen grab.)

elk_circle_crop_enhance1

(Picture courtesy KRQU via YouTube screen grab.)

Numerous attempts were made to contact the rancher asking permission to go on his land, but access was denied. If I had the opportunity to visit the site, I would have checked radiation levels, EMF (electro-magnetic-field) levels, I would have taken infra-red photos of the area, taken water and soil samples from the location the elk were found and also investigated the unusual anomaly circle shown on the news footage.

Circular ground depressions have been seen at many of the animal mutilation cases I’ve investigated. When depressions are visible, I take soil samples inside the depression and outside the depression then ship them off to a lab. They run a complete soil nutrient analysis on both samples in which I compare the results. Every case where depressions were visible, the CEC’s or Cation-Exchange Capacity were altered in the ground depression compared to the test site. The soil is less soluble, in other words the nutrients have been altered. I’ve seen these results not only in Colorado soil, but Missouri and Georgia soil as well. This tells me the lab results are not dependent on sandy soil like Colorado or clay soil like Missouri or Georgia, but have similar results regardless of location!

Crested_Butte

Unusual circular ground depression, Crested Butte, Colorado.

Miller_mute

Unusual circular ground depression, Trinidad, Colorado.

Torres_mute

Unusual circular ground depression, San Luis, Colorado.

The San Luis case pictured above, the animal was laying in the middle of the ground depression and a bear purposely drug it out of the depression before it started eating the carcass. I’ve seen this one other time before in Missouri where cattle refused to cross a ground depression where a cow was mutilated. Sometimes animals react to these strange ground anomalies.

Are UFOs responsible for these animal deaths?

Eye witness testimonies claim strange lights have been seen in the mutilation area.  Actual craft have also been seen maneuvering like no known aircraft we know of. One case out of Washington which was reported by my colleague Ruben Uriarte in this episode, eye witnesses saw a craft actually lift an animal and fly away! A witness I talked with here in Colorado, saw the same thing near the San Luis area. Then sometimes the infamous Black Helicopters show up afterwards and take a look around.

Since 1967 an estimated 10,000 strange animal deaths have occurred across the US and every case law-enforcement has investigated, no human evidence has ever been found. No one caught, tried, and convicted. This is the largest Animal Cruelty Case in American history, yet some people seem to shun and laugh at it.

Well the ranchers aren’t laughing.

I’d like to thank the Science Channel for giving me the opportunity to “chime-in” on this particular episode. Some critics don’t think The Unexplained Files show is properly suited for the Science Channel, but I disagree. Science is changing all the time, and some science as we know it is definitely unexplainable, like the Elk deaths mentioned above.

So… “The Unexplained Files” is where Science Fiction meets, Science Fact!

Animal Mutilations! Who do you call? Well.. you can contact me!

slide14_Aaron-cattle-mutilation-investigation

For the past few years one of my largest, most consuming ongoing investigations are, “Animal Mutilations”. I say Animal Mutilations because not only have I investigated cows, but horses and dogs as well. I’ve received reports on sheep, goats and coyotes and even interviewed a rancher about a rabbit, so it’s not just cows and maybe it never was, but cows just seem to take the spotlight.

In 2013, I was featured on the Science Channel’s, “Unexplained Files” talking about my mutilation cases; In 2012, I was featured on National Geographic’s, “Chasing UFOs” talking about my mutilation cases, and in 2010, I was featured on Syfy’s, “Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files”, talking about my mutilation cases. Last year 2013, MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) the largest and most impressive UFO investigative network in the world, named me “Director of Cattle Mutilations” so I wrote the MUFON Field investigation training manual on mutilations and taught a field investigative class at last year’s MUFON Symposium in Las Vegas. I guess I must be doing something right.

What do I do? I look at every investigation as a skeptic even though I’m not one. I do this to be non-bias so as not to miss evidence a biased investigator might miss. And boy have I found evidence. Not only with animal mutilations, but Roswell, Bigfoot, and Ghost investigations as well. I’m a Field Investigator, this is what I do.

From time to time a TV or newspaper reporter will contact me about a story they’re working on. Most of the time I’m able to give them the information they need, but sometimes they’re just interested in the story, and really not interested in the phenomenon itself. I call this, “Lazy Journalism.” If I can’t adhere to their convenient schedules for them, inconvenient for me, like not living in the same state, they’ll opt to find anybody who wants to be on TV or in a news paper article talking about something they’re really not qualified to talk about. Like, “Animal Mutilations”. When this occurs, they generally find someone who has never done a field investigation but think they know all about it, or even worse, a skeptic! Someone whose job is to talk with one’s foot in their mouth. I deal with these people all the time and they always repeat the same old audio loop, “Well I’ll believe it when I see it.” Well that’s not necessarily true, because even if they saw it, they still wouldn’t believe it and would come up with some other reason no matter how stupid it may sound to the rest of the world. But the journalists who take the time to do a good story and interview the people who actually do the field investigations, would learn this:

  • Since 1967 there’s been an estimated 10,000 mutilations cases across the US. ( George Knapp)
  • Since 1967, any law enforcement agency that investigated animal mutilations have never been able to find the culprit. No person has ever been caught, tried and convicted for performing a mutilation. This does not include animal cruelty cases, but cases with all the earmarks of a true mutilation phenomenon like:

1. No signs of animal struggle

2. No signs of blood pooling.

3. Unusual incisions.

4. No evidence of predator take downs.

5. No evidence of human involvement.

6. Sometimes strange lights seen before the mutilations take place.

7. Sometimes the animal is laying in a sort-of crop circle.

8. Sometimes Black helicopters fly over the area after a mutilation took place.

9. Most of the time the rancher is hit multiple times either in the same year or

over a few year cycle.

10. All my investigations the animals are facing towards the east.

11. The Ranchers have no idea how their animal died.

12. These are the largest Animal Cruelty Cold Cases in the USA!

I can go on and on, but I need to get to a point. If journalists want to know what’s really going on, then they need to talk to the source. The Field Investigator. Because if they did, then I could update them on what’s current.

What’s current?

In Bryan County, Oklahoma, February of this year, a rancher found 2 calves dead. Both animals had their genitals removed. The incisions were straight and precise. The ground was covered with ice and no blood was present, it should have pooled on the ice if it was a normal death. There were no signs how the animal died, their were no signs of predator involvement, just 2 animals laying dead mysteriously. The rancher had never seen anything like this before. Let me say this again because it’s important.

The rancher has never seen anything like this before!

This is their job, their life, most of them 2nd and 3rd generation ranchers. They are familiar with natural cow deaths, it’s the un-natural ones that scare the hell out of them. This particular case veterinarians were involved and also Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture division, so very experienced people associated with cows were investigating these deaths.

I talked with Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture’s Chief Agent (name on file) and also spoke with Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture’s Investigative division agent, (name on file) about these cases updating both of them on the animal mutilation phenomenon. What I’ve seen, what I’ve learned, and what they need to look for. I sent them pictures, investigation techniques and notes and lab results helping them with their investigation. Oh by the way, “They called me.”

On May 2nd, I was contacted by a rancher near the Colorado/Kansas border. He found a 3-year-old 1100 pound Angus dead with its udder missing, laying in a circular ground depression. The animal was facing towards the east and had every indication it had been dropped by the way it lay and the broken bones that were seen. The rancher brought in a veterinarian who performed a field necropsy, and no signs of cause of death were found.

The rancher took soil samples for me inside and outside the unusual ground depression, and currently they’re at the lab for analysis. When I get the lab results back, I’ll post the results on this website.

Oh by the way, this same rancher called me two weeks ago, mid June, and had another mutilation. Same type of cuts, same type of scenario. What bothers him the most is, “Is he being targeted?” No other ranchers in the area have had mutilation cases, just him recently. If this was a natural predator, it wouldn’t make sense for an animal to venture across other ranches just to kill a cow on a specific ranch; And no, the rancher has not seen any type of natural predator on his ranch that can take down an 1100 pound animal and leave it with very unusual precise incision marks.

So from time to time stop by UFOnut.com because I always post my investigations. I’ve been asked by some people, “Why don’t you write a book?” Well I’ve lost some media appearances because I haven’t written one, but at this time I look at it this way. I’ve written enough blogs to fill a book and get 1000′s of hits on my website monthly. My readers get to see my investigations for free, and can personally comment on them. They also have the opportunity to email me directly with any questions they may have or suggestions for future investigations. Try doing that with a book.

You’ll also get a chance to see me on this season’s “Unexplained Files Season 2” talking about…. well I can’t tell you, so just keep an eye on the Science Channel’s website for details, and yes, it will be worth watching.

Thanks for visiting UFOnut.com, it’s a pleasure working for you.

UFO’s and Cattle Mutilations in the News, 11/04/2013

PHTO0016.JPG

This is a full light spectrum picture taken of rancher Tom Miller and journalist Scott Mastro at one of the cattle mutilation sites.

On October 23rd, I met with Trinidad Chronicle newspaper correspondent Scott Mastro in Trinidad, Colorado. I had previously spoke to him about the unusual lights that were seen in the area and the multiple animal mutilations we’ve had in Trinidad this year. He was interested in writing an article about the unusual events which occurred there, so rather than giving him second hand information, I took him right to the source.  We met with rancher Tom Miller at one of this years cattle mutilation sites and while I was there, I shot a few pictures and some video with a full light spectrum video camera with a 850nm white light blocking filter. This enables me to shoot IR and UV during the daytime. I just started using this technique looking for possible evidence outside the white light spectrum in which we can’t see with our own eyes.

After my camera experiments and Scott’s interview with Tom, we then drove to meet rancher Mike Duran, who talked about his previous mutilation case and the UFO sightings he’s had this year.

Thank you Scott for investing your time and effort to write this article, and thank you for mentioning my website which gives the readers a place to go if they need to communicate their findings and concerns to someone.

The following link is to the Trinidad Chronicle newspaper article.

July 29th, 2013 Cattle Mutilation in Colorado

310

The morning of Tuesday, July 30th 2013, I was contacted again by rancher Miller from Trinidad, Colorado and was informed he found another mutilated animal on his ranch. This time it was a 5 day old Red Angus calf located alone in an adjacent field at least 200 yards away from the rest of the herd. This is the rancher’s seventh mutilation overall and the fourth this year.

The rancher monitors all the new calves on a daily basis until they are a couple of weeks old when he knows they’re healthy enough not to be watched. The morning of the 30th, his count was down by one, so he started looking around the area where the herd was that morning and noticed the mother standing alone outside the herd staring off in the distance. This puzzled the rancher, so he started walking in the direction the mother was looking towards, and eventually found her calf.

The dead calf was laying by itself showing no signs of struggling and no signs of blood on the ground or on the hide. The carcass was facing towards the East and appeared as if it was placed there and with no signs of drag marks or entrails nearby. Not quite sure at this time why most of my animals are facing east when the ranchers find them, but I have a couple of theories I can’t share at this time.

The only unknown damage to the animal was a four-inch hole in the anal area. Once again no blood was seen on the hide or on the ground near the animal. After briefly speaking to rancher Miller over the phone from Colorado Springs, I made the decision to drive to Trinidad that day in hopes this animal would be a good specimen for a lab necropsy. The doctors at Colorado State University Veterinary Lab had told me the best specimen for a lab necropsy would be a carcase less than 24 hours old, this animal seemed to fit that requirement. So off I went leaving work early, driving by my house to pick up my field kits, and start my 2 hour drive to rancher Miller’s house near Trinidad.

I arrived around 3:30pm and the rancher and I drove off to the site where the animal was found. I asked him if it was common for a calf to be separated from its mother at that young age, and the rancher said no. The mother is very protective and will fight off coyotes when her calf is in danger. The most common time a coyote or pack of coyotes will kill a calf is when the mother is actually delivering her calf. As the calf is being born, the coyotes take advantage of the mother’s inability to fight during the birth, and they’ll literally grab the calf as it’s exiting the birth canal. Due to the stress of birthing, the mother is unable to get up fast enough to protect her young. But when the calf is up on all fours, the mother keeps it close to her and near the herd for protection.

One question kept haunting me over and over again. Why was the mother so far from her calf and afraid to approach it? Generally if the mother’s calf is dead due to natural causes, she’ll stay by its side restless while bellowing. This was not the case, the mother was afraid to go near her calf and stayed close to the herd, yet she was compelled to have her eyes focused on the location her calf was laying. This is very strange.

After examining the carcass of the calf and the location it was found, the decision was made to take the long journey to Fort Collins and deliver the calf to the lab. Because this was the rancher’s seventh mutilation, I needed to be sure the animal didn’t die of natural causes. So off I drove with the calf in the back of my truck and started my 4 hour drive to university.

At 10:30pm, I arrived at Colorado State University lab in Fort Collins. Luckily for me the lab has a 24 hour drop off time to bring in animals. This is one of the reasons I picked this lab, and the other main reason is, it’s also the best veterinary lab in the state of Colorado. That is a biggie! After dropping off the animal to the late night attendant and filling out the proper paper work, I started my 2 hour drive back home to Colorado Springs arriving around 1:30am. What a day.

The next day at 2:30pm July 31st, I got a call from the lab doctor (name on file) and we discussed his findings while I asked other questions.

He saw the tongue was missing and the edge of the unknown cut was jagged. I asked him if he had ever seen this before, and he said no, that it appeared a little odd.

He saw the complete digestive track was missing from the stomach to the intestines including one of the kidneys. It looked as if they were all pulled out through a 10cm hole in the anal area. I asked him if this was common of what scavengers do, and once again he said he’s never seen this before and thought it was odd too!

There was no blood in the heart, but that could have been due to time of death when the heart was contracted.

Part of the lungs were inflated which meant the animal was alive and healthy at one time.

There was a 10cm hole in the anal area, the rectum was gone, and there was no blood around that area.

The pelvis was protruding through the 10cm hole.

Both eyes appeared to have been pecked out by birds. (This is common and was once a misconception of a standard mutilation.)

No predator or scavenger bites were located anywhere on the carcass.

Signs of maggets and larva were noticable. ( Larva eggs hatch within 24 hours so this carcass would have been older than 24 hours and probably closer to 30.

No excess amount of blood was found in the cavity of the carcass. (Generally a calf will have over 1 liter of blood.)

No cause of death determined.

Once thing that bothered me about the death was the noticeable lack of hemorrhaging and the lack of blood in the heart. If there were no noticeable signs of hemorrhaging, would this account for the lack of blood in the heart? If the heart was still pumping when the calf died, there should be signs of hemorrhaging. The calf could have pumped all the blood out of the heart on its last breath, then a scavenger could have come in later, but pull the complete digestive track out? Pull the tongue out? If this was a common trait with scavenger feeding, then the lab doctor wouldn’t have said he’s never seen that before.

Note: The lab doctor’s findings on the official report reflect just the necropsy lab results based on what they observed. It states what they found during the necropsy but not necessarily what’s missing. As professionals they won’t give their opinions officially because as scientists they must stay neutral in their work. Even though the doctor stated he had not seen certain characteristics in this animal compared to other animals in his career, we still have to leave the possibility open to natural scavenger causes for science’s sake.

The area in the field where the carcass was found showed slight signs of a possible anomaly on the terrain. I took soil samples which were sent out for analysis. At the time of this blog, the soil results are not available probably due to a possible back log of work at the lab. We’ve had some major weather issues here in Colorado lately.

The following is the official necropsy results from the university, any differences between the official report and my conversation with the lab doctor are due to added questions I asked after the report was filed. All expenses were paid by me, and I never charge the ranchers for my time in any of my investigations.

GROSS FINDINGS:
A neonatal bull calf was submitted for necropsy examination. The soft horn (slipper) was partially present on the front hooves. The carcass was severely autolyzed with marked subcutaneous and intramuscular emphysema. The eyes were bilaterally absent. The hair coat was extensively covered with maggot eggs and larvae. Maggot eggs and larvae were present in the oral cavity and in and around the rectum. The rostral two thirds of the tongue was absent and the remaining margins were jagged. No hemorrhage was observed at the edge of the remaining tongue. There was an approximately 10 cm in diameter hole around the regions of the rectum with irregular margins and no associated hemorrhage. The pelvis was partially extruded through the defect in the rectum. The skeletal muscle around the right femur was absent and there was no associated hemorrhage. The only abdominal viscera observed were the liver, left kidney, and a portion of the
abomasum. No significant lesions were observed in the thoracic or abdominal viscera.
