Rare colorful ‘cloudships’ appear above the Arctic Circle

This week, sky watchers are reporting an outbreak of rare colorful ‘cloudships’ in the skies above the Arctic Circle.

Strange looking clouds with straight edges and matching angled corners forming rectangles?

Aliens are hiding their spacecraft in colorful clouds these days?

According to Spaceweather, the clouds are polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). Unlike normal grey-white clouds, which hug Earth’s surface at altitudes of only 5 to 10 km, PSCs float through the stratosphere (25 km) and they are fantastically colorful.

Also known as “nacreous” or “mother of pearl” clouds, the icy structures form in the lower stratosphere when temperatures drop to around minus 85ºC. High-altitude sunlight shining through tiny ice particles ~10µm across produce the characteristic bright iridescent colors by diffraction and interference.

Technically called “lenticular clouds,” the weird phenomenon
seen over Cape Town has a simple explanation

Social media users in Cape Town, South Africa, posted photos over the weekend that call to mind classic alien invasion movies. The pictures feature eerie, saucer-shaped puffs that seem to hang over the sky like UFOs.

But these so-called “UFO clouds” are nothing to fear.

Meteorologists call them lenticular clouds, which form when strong, moist winds blow over rough terrain, such as mountains or valleys. Picturesque Cape Town is framed by such features, including the 3,500-foot (1,066-meter) Table Mountain. […]

Amazing video of a lightning strike with thunder’s clap

For the first time, scientists have precisely captured a map of the boisterous bang radiating from a lightning strike.

Scientists shot a long copper wire into a lightning-prone cloud using a small rocket.

The generated lightning followed the wire down to the ground, allowing the researchers to record the sound waves of the resulting thunder.

The green flashes are caused by the intense heating of the copper wire.

UFOs caught on camera move into cloud cover

A Colorado witness at Idaho Springs reported watching three bright light UFOs that moved “straight up into the clouds” about 1:16 a.m. today, according to testimony in Case 60176 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was working the night shift at the twin tunnels when he stopped to take a photograph of the tunnel and mountain.

“Someone else noticed the lights and pointed them out to us,” the witness stated. “Myself and many others all watched as they slowly flew straight up into the clouds. It was overcast and a bit foggy so they had to be pretty close. I didn’t realize until later that I had taken pictures of it.”

The witness included four images with the MUFON report, which was filed September 29, 2014: Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 and Image 4.
