A now retired airline mechanic recalls a UFO event from 1967 with three friends driving in a rural area near Hobbs, New Mexico, according to testimony in Case 63741 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The reporting witness was driving along a highway near Hobbs with three friends returning from a movie when the incident began.
“Noticed flares approximately three feet in diameter traveling approximately two feet above a power line running along parallel to the road one-half mile distance moving 30 mph,” the witness stated. “The car was traveling 60 mph and going in the opposite direction.”
The witness turned onto a road heading in the opposite direction.
“Thought flares might be an overload power burst from power station. Had never seen anything like it. After turning onto the side road and heading towards friend’s house passed by power transfer station on way to friend’s house.”
But as they passed the power station, the car “suddenly died.”
“Pulled off on side of road under power station lights. Got out of car – all four of us. Thought car might be out of gas although gas gauge was reading one-quarter tank.”
At this point, the witness sent one of his friends in the car to a restaurant one-half mile away to call his brother to bring gas.
“While standing outside car waiting for friend to return, a flare started traveling along three feet above the power line. When our eyes automatically back tracked back to the origin of the flares path, with our eyes looking almost straight up above our heads, there was a hovering disc 30 feet above us with no lights and silent.”
The group had been outside the vehicle for several minutes, but had not noticed the disc before.
“Apparently it had been there for the approximately five minutes we had been standing outside the car, but we never looked up directly above our heads all that time. We were astounded because it was so close and we had not seen it – although it had no lights. The power station lights were reflecting off of it and clearly showed a gray disc easily visible with sharp edges and blotting out bright stars in the clear desert sky.”
The group reacted to what they were seeing.
“Our mouths fell open and tears were forming in my eyes. No more flares came out as we observed it for approximately 15 minutes. After observing it for another approximately five minutes, it very, very slowly started to ascend straight up. I got the impression that it was in distress. It took 10 minutes for it to ascend until it appeared the size of a dime. All this time it was clearly visible with a sharp outline.”
Seconds later the object disappeared from sight.
“When it had ascended to an altitude where it was the size of a nickel my friend returned from calling his brother for gas and witnessed the last two minutes of the sighting. We put the three gallons of gas in the car and it started and we went home.”
The witness called police to report the incident.
“The officer seemed annoyed and gave me an excuse that seemed to me to be a stock answer to give people who report UFOs. He said White Sands 300 miles away had tested a rocket that day. The next day I checked the gas gauge on the big Buick and it was one-half full. I’m 63 now and have never reported this again. I have only told about a dozen people in my life. I just wanted to get this story out before I die. I am a retired aircraft mechanic for a major airline. I am also a commercial pilot rated to fly many types of aircraft. Thanks for listening.”

An Alabama witness recalls a UFO encounter near Scottsboro when “an intense white light” engulfed the vehicle he was driving and shut off the car, street lights and watches, according to December 10, 2014, testimony in Case 61905 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The events occurred in April of 1981 when the witness accompanied his fiancée and her parents to visit the fiancée’s brother and family in Scottsboro.
“I drove the entire distance in her father’s car, a late model Olds Cutlass coupe,” the witness stated. “We had been visiting and talking into the night and I had a beer or two. It began to get late and my fiancée (now wife, Anna, of over 33 years) and I were to go stay with her brother’s in-laws in town.”
The witness described the area.
“Her brother lived in a log home on a peninsula into the back waters and main channel of the Tennessee River at Roseberry Creek. It was populated with some street lights, but not many. The evening was clear with few clouds and a partial full moon.
“It should also be noted that just up the Tennessee River, in Stevenson, was, at that time, a nuclear reactor project which was in the process of being built in Hollywood, just to the north of the location of this incident, the Bellefont reactor project.
“I am not sure if there was any nuclear material at the site at that time, as the unit is still unfinished. Another site just north of the Bellefont unit, at Widow’s Creek, is coal fired and likely being shutdown.”
The witness describes the road trip.
“At around 11:30 p.m. we left her brother’s house and began the 5-7 mile trip to the in-law’s house. After about a quarter-mile the car began to knock and shut off. The radio stopped and shut off. At the same time, a bright white light appeared over the tree line just off the road to the right – approximately to the northeast.”
The sounds of Mother Nature disappeared.
“We had the windows cracked about two inches and noticed no crickets which we heard upon leaving the house and entering the car. The road is narrow at that point, with water on the left side and a house just prior to it. There is a street light at that point, which had also turned off when the bright light appeared.”
The witnesses did not understand what was happening to them.
“As the intense and blinding white light shone upon us through the windshield with us trying to peer up and find out what was going on, Anna asked if we should get out to see.
“I said, ‘No,’ also mentioning that we should stay buckled in and lock the doors, forgetting about the windows being partially down.”
They then noticed another anomaly.
“I looked at my new Seiko LCD watch and it had stopped, as the screen was blank and even the internal light would not work when I pressed the button. Anna’s battery powered analog watch even stopped. I don’t remember the exact time, though.”
Then the light vanished.
“After what seemed to be an eternity, the bright white light simply disappeared. No noise of any kind was heard until the radio came back on and the crickets began to chirp again. We looked at each other in shock at what had just occurred. I remember her watch having restarted, but was about 10 minutes ahead and thought that was very weird since the second hand had stopped when I looked at it while the light was present.”
The witness had to restart the car.
“I started the car after putting it in park. Apparently, I must have let the engine help slow us to a stop after the vacuum from the power brake booster was spent from my heavy braking. We continued on our journey to the in-laws and agreed to not speak a word of our experience as we thought people would think us crazy.”
They then learned that other family members had experienced something similar.
“Many years later, in 2007, while in Chicago visiting her youngest niece from Alabama who is now an ER doctor, we mentioned the above story to her from 26 years prior. She was not amazed as her grandparents whom we stayed with on that visit in 1981, had also experienced the exact same situation in the same location numerous times. They are both now deceased and cannot corroborate or tell their stories.”
The witness says they had information about UFOs prior to this incident.
“While I believed in UFOs before 1981, a now deceased uncle worked with the USAF’s FTD group at WPAFB here in Dayton and was elusively frank with me when describing Project Blue Book, using a non-denial denial phrase to let me know about this subject, I had never thought much about it for about 12 years. I don’t believe I was influenced by any unconscious belief in UFOs with this experience in April of 1981. However, since that time, both my wife and I are avid believers and do not push aside many stories of similar or more involved sightings. Sure, the government could be working on secret projects and the like, but that only begs the question: Where did they get the technology so quickly?”

A recent video shows a car driving down a quiet street when, all of a sudden, a flash of light is seen and the car vanishes from sight.
The video was uploaded to YouTube on Friday, November 7 by user The Paranormal Frequency with the title, “UFO OVNI – Car Gets Abducted In Cavalier, North Dakota.” The only details provided with the video come from the video’s description that states, “A security camera in Cavalier, North Dakota caught this strange event that looks as though a car has been abducted by a UFO or something else?”
In the video, the car is shown driving toward the camera. Although the video’s description refers to this camera as a security camera, it is actually a city-owned live webcam located on Main Street and 1st Avenue in Cavalier. As the car approaches the camera, a bright flash and a strange droning sound occur, then the car disappears.
Although there appear to be many who believe the authenticity of this video, there are many red flags indicating that this incredible video is a simple hoax.
The first red flags are in the video’s title and description. Beginning the title with the words “UFO” and “OVNI,” which is the UFO equivalent in other parts of the world, suggests that the person who posted the video intended for the title to be sensational and wanted to attract attention. After all, there is no UFO/OVNI depicted in this video. Next, the poster added several keywords within the video’s description, including UFO, UFOs, UFO Sightings, and UFO Filmed, just to name a few. Again, the purpose of this is likely to attract viewers.
The YouTube channel on which this video was posted, The Paranormal Frequency, was just created on November 7, the day of the video’s upload. As of the date/time of this story, the channel only has one other video, which is titled, “UFO OVNI – Nephilim Alien Ghost Giant Caught On New Orleans Street Cam.” Again, notice the video features the words “UFO” and “OVNI” eventhough the video itself shows no UFO.
And The Paranormal Frequency hasn’t responded to any of the comments left on the North Dakota video. Instead, this user has posted comments containing links to other videos on YouTube: “UFO Caught During Live BBC News,” and “President Obama Shape Shifting Reptilian Proof (Reptilian Agenda).”
Looking at the North Dakota video, both the bright flash and the droning sound seem quite artificial. When looking at the moment the flash begins, there is no apparent source of the flash. Rather, all light sources appear to uniformly increase in intensity before the entire screen flashes white. This identical flash can be recreated with video editing software. Although some believe this would take an extremely skilled video editor with a million dollar budget and hours of time to create, I reproduced the effect to illustrate what basic editing skills and a couple minutes can easily accomplish.
Although the North Dakota video is not a definitive hoax, there is plenty of evidence making that possibility likely.
What are your thoughts? Does the video in question show an actual alien abduction, or is this just another lame hoax attempt? Share your thoughts by posting a comment below or by posting on the Open Minds Facebook page.
