The Next Frontier: Space Miners Are the Universe’s Future Tycoons

The Next Frontier: Space Miners Are the Universe’s Future Tycoons

The next gold rush will be intergalactic.

In 2009, a collection of astronauts, academics, and aerospace industrialists convened to review NASA’s present and future plans for manned space flight. Informally dubbed the “Augustine Commission,” the more-stuffily named Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee determined that our ultimate goal ought to be nothing less than “to chart a path for human expansion into the solar system.”

Considering that Earth’s resources are finite and that the well of human desire knows no bottom, a continued future for our species will likely require robust manned spaceflight to leave the planet.

NASA’s Bold Plan to Save Earth From Killer Asteroids

NASA’s Bold Plan to Save Earth From Killer Asteroids

Just beyond Earth’s home in the solar system, about 94 million miles from the Sun, a coal-black asteroid slowly rotates as it orbits our star. It’s about 1,650 feet across, with a slight bulge around the middle, like a spinning top. Its low density means it’s not solid, but instead it’s likely a crumbly pile of carbon-rich rocks held together by gravity.

The asteroid is called Bennu, and every six years, its egg-shaped orbital path brings it just 185,000 miles from Earth — roughly 53,000 miles closer than our moon.

This is the most dangerous time for our planet

This is the most dangerous time for our planet

We can’t go on ignoring inequality, because we have the means to destroy our world but not to escape it.

As a theoretical physicist based in Cambridge, I have lived my life in an extraordinarily privileged bubble. Cambridge is an unusual town, centred around one of the world’s great universities. Within that town, the scientific community that I became part of in my 20s is even more rarefied.

And within that scientific community, the small group of international theoretical physicists with whom I have spent my working life might sometimes be tempted to regard themselves as the pinnacle.

Stephen Hawking confirms this 200,000mph cigar-object in space may be alien spacecraft

Stephen Hawking confirms this 200,000mph cigar-object in space may be alien spacecraft

STEPHEN Hawking is leading an investigation into whether the first object ever to arrive from OUTSIDE our solar system is a spaceship from an alien civilisation.

The first mysterious object to reach our solar system was originally thought to be a comet or an asteroid from within the system.

But, scientists realised it was neither and had travelled unimaginable disatances through interstellar space at almost 200,000 mph.

Now, a scientific body led by Stephen Hawking is now trying to decipher whether the “cigar-shaped” object is an alien probe or a previously unseen natural phenomenon.

Earth Is Getting Hit by Too Much Antimatter, and Nobody Knows Why

Earth Is Getting Hit by Too Much Antimatter, and Nobody Knows Why

Amid the high speed cosmic rays raining down on us from the depths of space are a handful of antimatter particles called positrons.

Astronomers think that Earth is showered by these ‘anti-electrons’ because of pulsars, but there’s a weird catch – there are more of these particles coming at us than there should be. And now, thanks to a new study, we might finally get some answers.

Cosmic rays are incredibly fast particles, since they’re being shot down from space at high energies.

Bizarre shape of interstellar asteroid

Bizarre shape of interstellar asteroid

Above: This artist’s impression shows the first interstellar asteroid: Oumuamua. This unique object was discovered on 19 October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii. Subsequent observations from ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and other observatories around the world show that it was travelling through space for millions of years before its chance encounter with our star system. `Oumuamua seems to be a dark red highly-elongated metallic or rocky object, about 400 metres long, and is unlike anything normally found in the Solar System.

NASA’S $1 BILLION JUPITER PROBE JUST SENT BACK STUNNING NEW PHOTOS OF JUPITER

NASA’S $1 BILLION JUPITER PROBE JUST SENT BACK STUNNING NEW PHOTOS OF JUPITER

Traveling above Jupiter at more than 130,000 miles per hour, NASA’s $1 billion Juno probe took its ninth set of stunning flyby images on October 24. But the sun slipped between the giant planet and Earth for more than a week, blocking the spacecraft from beaming home its precious bounty of data.

Now that the conjunction is over, however, new raw image data from Juno’s ninth perijove — as the spacecraft’s high-speed flybys are called — has poured in.

Mars ‘Pyramid’ Seen By NASA Rover Isn’t Quite What It Seems

Mars ‘Pyramid’ Seen By NASA Rover Isn’t Quite What It Seems

NASA’s Curiosity rover has photographed a pyramid on Mars–at least that’s what some paranormal enthusiasts seem to think.

A new YouTube video from Paranormal Crucible maintains that a photo snapped by the rover’s Mastcam camera on May 7, 2015 shows a pyramid of “near perfect design and shape” and that the object is likely “the result of intelligent design and certainly not a trick of light and shadow.”

Not surprisingly, NASA’s explanation for the object in the photo is somewhat simpler.

There is a huge ‘monolith’ on Phobos, one of Mars’s moons

There is a huge ‘monolith’ on Phobos, one of Mars’s moons

The mysterious object was spotted several years ago by a NASA probe, and to this day nobody is quite sure what it is or how it got there.

“When people find out about that they are going to say, ‘Who put that there? Who put that there?’”

These are the words of Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, in 2009. He was talking about a peculiar and solitary large rock, a monolith, that sits on the surface of the Martian moon Phobos.

Mysterious object seen speeding past sun could be ‘visitor from another star system’

Mysterious object seen speeding past sun could be ‘visitor from another star system’

If its origins are confirmed, the asteroid or comet, named A/2017 U1, will be the first object known to come from elsewhere in the galaxy, say astronomers.

A mysterious object detected hurtling past our sun could be the first space rock traced back to a different solar system, according to astronomers tracking the body.

While other objects have previously been mooted as having interstellar origins, experts say the latest find, an object estimated to be less than 400m in diameter, is the best contender yet.
