The Solar System and Beyond is Awash in Water

The Solar System and Beyond is Awash in Water

As NASA missions explore our solar system and search for new worlds, they are finding water in surprising places. Water is but one piece of our search for habitable planets and life beyond Earth, yet it links many seemingly unrelated worlds in surprising ways.

“NASA science activities have provided a wave of amazing findings related to water in recent years that inspire us to continue investigating our origins and the fascinating possibilities for other worlds, and life, in the universe,” said Ellen Stofan, chief scientist for the agency.

There’s a giant egg floating in our solar system with a ring around it

There’s a giant egg floating in our solar system with a ring around it

Some of the most exciting new discoveries in space come from far, far away, thanks to telescopes capable of detecting exoplanets that are so distant we’d likely never be able to actually visit them, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still some pretty interesting stuff here in our own Solar System. Take, for example, the dwarf planet Haumea, a large egg-shaped body that hangs out beyond Neptune in the far reaches of our little planetary neighborhood, which researchers just discovered also happens to have a ring around it.

We’ll Say Goodbye To Our Planet In 1,000 Years, Says Stephen Hawking

We’ll Say Goodbye To Our Planet In 1,000 Years, Says Stephen Hawking

Humans have been on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years. So far so good, right? Well, according to famed physicist Stephen Hawking, things around here are about to get ugly for us. It’s time to start poking around the neighborhood for a better place to call home. And by place, we mean planet.

Hawking raised concerns for human life on Earth during a speech at the Oxford Union on November 15, 2016, essentially giving the human race an expiration date.

Nobel Prize for Physics awarded to team who found gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of spacetime

Nobel Prize for Physics awarded to team who found gravitational waves – ripples in the fabric of spacetime

The team who discovered gravitational waves – ripples in space and time – have been awarded the Nobel Prize of Physics.

The waves were predicted by Einstein in his General Theory of relativity, but were not recorded for more than 100 years.

They were finally spotted in 2016 by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Ligo) in a discovery was hailed as “the biggest scientific breakthrough” of the century by scientists.

Today the Nobel Prize was awarded to Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Barry Barish and Kip Thorne of the California Institute of Technology, all members of the Ligo team.

Mystery of a Star That Vanished After 14 Days

Nearly six centuries ago, Korean astronomers scanning the night sky for omens of the future spotted a new star in the cluster of stars they called Wei, and what today’s star watchers consider the tail of the Scorpius constellation.

Fourteen nights later, it vanished.

Astronomers have now identified the source of that brief brightening — a binary star system a couple of thousand light-years away.
