'New Evidence' in Romanek Porn Case Precipitates Another Trial Delay

FORT COLLINS — A Loveland man facing charges of possessing and distributing child pornography had his March jury trial vacated Friday and reset for eight days starting July 31.

The case of defendant Stanley Romanek, a 53-year-old self-proclaimed UFO and extraterrestrial expert, has been open on the court’s docket for more than 1,100 days, Eighth Judicial District Judge Susan Blanco noted in postponing the trial.

Prosecuting attorney Josh Ritter did not object to further delaying the case.

Romanek waived his right to a speedy trial Friday so his attorneys, Elizabeth and Theodore McClintock, have time to review additional evidence that has surfaced in the case.

“We’re talking a lot of forensic evidence [uncovered by the prosecution] here,” Elizabeth McClintock said to the court.

The Latest Update on the Woes of Alleged Alien Abductee Stan Romanek

The Latest Update on the Woes of Alleged Alien Abductee Stan Romanek

Another crash ‘n’ burn

Not that we need additional examples of journalism’s failure to apply minimum standards to UFO coverage, but the latest update on the woes of alleged alien abductee Stan Romanek is an especially bitter pill, considering how much mileage this guy clocked at the expense of a far more important story.

De Void rarely ventures into the abduction realm because of its inherent subjectivity. Some accounts can be interesting, perhaps even valuable, but the bottom line is, there are no substitutes for multiple simultaneous eyewitness reports fortified with radar tracks. Which is

what MUFON’s well-documented report on the Stephenville UFO incident delivered in the summer of 2008. Not to mention how its FOIA requests forced the military to retract its original spin on related events.

MUFON released its Stephenville analysis – complete with the UFO’s dead-on approach toward the no-fly zone around President Bush’s “western White House” in Crawford, Tex., on Jan. 8, 2008– to little fanfare on July 11 of that year. Considering how F-16s had forced down accidental private-pilot intrusions on at least three separate earlier occasions during Bush’s presidency, and also considering how the bogey had no transponder, and that radar pingbacks showed there were no jet fighters anywhere to challenge the target as it bore down on restricted air space, one might think this constituted what we in the news business like to call news. Instead, Romanek’s abduction scenario had sucked all the oxygen out of the room by time the report came out. Why? Well, Romanek supposedly had footage of a space alien.

Pictures are to the media gaggle what Twizzlers are to ants. And that’s what Romanek’s confidante, Denver resident Jeff Peckman, dangled before the press on May 30, 2008 – a single teaser frame lifted off an extended sequence purporting to show a lightbulb-headed space alien doing a peeping-Tom number on Romanek’s bedroom window. Although the footage would eventually go public, the rest was withheld at the time on account of documentary contract negotiations. But it didn’t matter. That single rather cheesy image was enough to swivel all the right heads and, a week or so later, it catapulted Peckman onto David Letterman’s national stage, where he went on to claim Uncle Sam has confirmed 57 species of space aliens have visited Earth. Peckman would continue to draw media attention by lobbying the city council to form an E.T. welcoming committee.

Meanwhile, a few weeks later, back in the Denver suburb of Littleton, MUFON/Stephenville report co-author and radar expert Glen Schulze couldn’t get the press to give him the time of day. “Neither the Denver Post nor the Rocky Mountain News has shown any curiosity about this (Stephenville) story,” Schulze complained at the time, “and I’m in their backyard. There was one article about a guy who wants to form an E.T. welcoming committee …”

This happened so long ago, the Rocky Mountain News has been dead for seven years. The reason “we” choose to rehash this incident is that Denver media is now reporting how “UFO conspiracy theorist Stan Romanek” will soon stand trial on child-porn charges. Although the alien video – also called the “boo tape” – and his claims surrounding it have fallen apart, Romanek has been charging government harassment ever since. On Sunday, Romanek-watcher Jack Brewer issued a blistering takedown of the accused’s sometimes freakish efforts to defend the boo tape, which is well worth reading. And because Romanek was once celebrated in certain circles as The Man With The Proof, Brewer poses a challenge of his own:

“Should the UFO community not suffer the public relations consequences of celebrating what to more moderate members of society clearly appear to be disturbed individuals? If not the ufology event organizers and consumers, who, exactly, is responsible for putting people at podiums who fail to demonstrate abilities to follow and present rational lines of reasoning?

“… No matter how the Romanek trial unfolds, the social issues will be on full display, and their relevance will remain regardless of the verdict. It will be completely apparent … that the UFO community, in its current incarnation, offers acceptance and normalcy to people intent on avoiding accountability for their statements and actions while averting from critical thinking.”

Whether you agree or not, this much is true: those damning Stephenville radar records – the data that so clearly embarrassed the USAF eight years ago – have been relegated to the fringe while the man who enthralled large audiences with an endlessly tangled web is news. Again. So if we’re going to point fingers, let’s not let the media off the hook, either.

Stan Romanek

The meandering path of Stan Romanek winds into the courtroom next Monday, Aug. 15. His 2000 reported UFO encounter snowballed into a chain of increasingly fantastic, difficult to believe scenarios, often supported by no more than flimsy evidence bordering on insults to intelligence. His troubled story evolved to allege that enduring alien abduction and the covert nefarious activities of government agents became an ongoing way of life.

Whatever extraordinary events may or may not have taken place around him, Stan Romanek will now be judged by a Colorado jury on two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The high profile UFO

community personality is accused of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Questionable Claims

The Stan Romanek saga is out of the ordinary even by ufology standards, and that was the case long before his Feb. 13, 2014 arrest. It is unusual for a number of reasons, including because it is often considered utterly unbelievable. This is in a genre in which first hand accounts of alien spacecraft and their occupants are routinely exchanged with casual acceptance.

One of the things making Romanek’s claims so difficult to buy is that he repeatedly led with the chin where angels fear to tread. He presented evidence intended to support his claims, yet when the “evidence” frequently went south, the persecution card was played. This was typically done under extremely shaky circumstances in which even the most willing to believe tended to doubt Romanek’s accusations of government plots to discredit him.

Although Stan’s efforts indeed led some to promote his saga as the most thoroughly documented alien abduction case ever, it would equally be true that his “evidence” did not produce the validation he likely sought. Romanek may at times have been his own worst enemy.

Take, for instance, when James Carrion reported the word “follow” was misspelled as “fallow” in a report Romanek submitted to the National UFO Reporting Center. The word was then misspelled the same way, “fallow,” in correspondence allegedly written by independent witnesses. Three of them. The spelling-challenged witnesses, two of which were supposedly physicists, to the best of my knowledge have yet to be produced or verified to exist.

“Fallow” also surfaced in an alleged Air Force document Stan presented that was titled “Project Romanek.” He claimed the doc was left in his mailbox.

I kid you not. As Carrion wrote in 2009:

The word fallow shows up in Stan’s original UFO reports to the National UFO Reporting Center.

The word fallow shows up in the UFO report to the National UFO Reporting Center by a 3rd party witness that allegedly had no relationship to Stan Romanek but corroborates one of his sightings.

The word fallow shows up in an alleged Air Force document that Stan mysteriously received in his mailbox, subject “Project Romanek.”

The word fallow shows up on the Jeff Rense website in an online posting by alleged physicist John Mannon who supports Stan’s story.

The word fallow shows up on the AboveTopSecret.com website in a posting by another alleged physicist (TommyBoy) who supports Stan’s claims.

“The fact that the word fallow got misspelled in any single document or online posting is not the issue,” Carrion emphasized, “but that the misspelled word shows up in so many third party documents supporting Stan’s claims – third parties that allegedly have no relationship or connection with Stan. What are the odds that all of these third parties misspelled the same word (in documents supportive of Stan), is due to chance?”

Then there was the Boo Video (see below). That’s the clip where Stan claimed he filmed an alien peeking in a window.

In one of his more infamous episodes, Stan clearly attempted to discreetly throw objects around a room while implying something paranormal was taking place during a 2014 video interview with Peter Maxwell Slattery. He would later tell Slattery that he intentionally discredited himself because he was instructed to do so during an anonymous phone call else face consequences to himself and loved ones. Basically, he went with the “I made a fool out of myself on purpose or they’d kill me” strategy. Did I mention leading with the chin where angels fear to tread?

An entire book could be written on the discrepancies alone in the Stan Romanek case. In 2009 he claimed a break in occurred at the home of a friend where he was temporarily staying in order to appear at a conference, and that police were called to investigate the situation. Allegations were also leveled that a bomb threat took place at the hotel hosting the event. Local police, however, reportedly confirmed they received no such calls during the time in question, and that no other departments would have responded to the reports. The Romanek saga is absolutely riddled with such inconsistencies.

Alleged Police Corruption

Less than two weeks after Romanek was arrested on child porn charges, he showed up at a Loveland hospital claiming he’d been beaten up by police. I obtained a copy of the police report and investigations, resulting in my article, Police detective: Evidence not consistent of a fight in Romanek assault case.

Romanek After Alleged Beating
Loveland Police Det. Henry Stucky suspended the case due to a lack of suspect information and leads, concluding the physical evidence at the scene did not support Romanek’s claims. Stucky cited several instances as well as information contained in reports composed by his colleagues as to why he drew his conclusion. The final report clearly suggested detectives were doubtful Romanek was actually assaulted and that they suspected the scene was staged.
The Romaneks reacted to the collective chain of events by upping their ongoing claims Stan was targeted by government agents in order to discredit him and keep the lid on the ET situation. Allegations of harassment and hacked computers were frequent and standard fare, yet no conclusive proof of such claims has been produced to date, much less that illegal material was covertly placed on his computers as claimed.

In what some would describe as a rather typical, convoluted attempt to deflect attention from the lack of actual evidence supporting Romanek’s many fantastic claims, the actions of Loveland Police Det. Brian Koopman were specifically blamed for Stan’s legal woes. Koopman, who was a key figure in the Romanek sexual exploitation of a child investigation, was later charged in an unrelated case with attempting to influence a public official. He was found not guilty.

Romanek supporters continued to allege Koopman set up Stan. The theory is in contradiction to the fact Koopman and fellow officers investigated Romanek due to a tip initially received from Homeland Security, and, basically, the conspiracy narrative that Koopman was out to get Romanek doesn’t make sense. It really wouldn’t matter if it made sense if it was validated, but it’s not, at least not at this point in time. It’s just empty talk, like the entire Romanek saga to a large extent, save the discrepancies and inconsistencies being the only circumstances that can be confirmed.

Ufology Indicted

None of the above means Stan Romanek is necessarily guilty of the charges. Far from it. He is entitled to due process.

What it does mean is, like it or not, ufology – and its community and culture – have been drug into that Colorado courtroom right along with Stan. And maybe they should be.

Should the UFO community not suffer the public relations consequences of celebrating what to more moderate members of society clearly appear to be disturbed individuals? If not the ufology event organizers and consumers, who, exactly, is responsible for putting people at podiums who fail to demonstrate abilities to follow and present rational lines of reasoning?

When vulnerable, non-consensual parties start getting hurt is often the point where authorities take notice of what’s going on within fringe subcultures. No matter how the Romanek trial unfolds, the social issues will be on full display, and their relevance will remain regardless of the verdict. It will be completely apparent to the less indoctrinated that the UFO community, in its current incarnation, offers acceptance and normalcy to people intent on avoiding accountability for their statements and actions while averting from critical thinking.

They also tend to avert from professional mental health services, and the consequences are staring us right in the face. Right there in Loveland. At the least as a reminder, if not a literal example.

There is no doubt we have a percentage of community members who suffer from untreated emotional trauma, a lingering effect of horrific events long since experienced. Those experiences just aren’t likely to have been at the hands of alien perpetrators. How we, as a community, choose to deal with that reality is relevant. It’s also going to trial.

Romanek, 52, is facing charges alleging distribution and possession of child pornography.

FORT COLLINS — Prosecuting attorneys brought a Homeland Security agent to the stand to testify Wednesday morning in connection with a case against Loveland resident Stanley Romanek.

Eighth Judicial District Judge Daniel Kaup listened as both defense and prosecuting attorneys questioned Special Agent Darrell Franklin, who testified that he identified Romanek’s IP address as the source of incriminating files on a peer-to-peer file sharing program in December of 2008.

Then, in 2013, Special Agent Vanessa Hipps alerted Loveland police that she had downloaded incriminating files from that same IP address, located at Romanek’s residence in Loveland. […]

British Policeman Claims He Was ‘Abducted’ By Aliens

British Policeman Claims He Was 'Abducted’ By Aliens

By Jon Austin

11-25-15

A POLICE man filed an official report to superiors that he lost time after witnessing an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) hovering overhead.

Alan Godfry, a former PC with West Yorkshire Police remains convinced he may have been abducted by aliens as he nears the 35th anniversary of the shocking series of events.

Mr Godfrey was on patrol in Todmorden in the early hours of November 28 1980, when he insists a large UFO spotted him while he was on a search for missing cattle.

The officer was in Burnley Road on the outskirts of the town looking for the farm animals that were reported missing and about to give up when he claims to have seen

what he thought was a bus approaching from a few hundred metres away.

But as he got nearer, he realised it was not the 5am commuter bus, but, instead, “a large mass”.

He said at the time: “It was a fuzzy oval that rotated at such speed and hovered so low over the road that it was causing the bushes by the side to shake.”

He claims he stopped to sketch the “UFO” on his note pad, but was overcome by a burst of light. […]

Most Documented UFO Sighting, Abduction – 40 Years Later

By Karen Warnick
The Independent
11-14-15

HEBER/OVERGAARD — “They forced me down on the table, but I lost consciousness, and the next thing I remember is waking up on a highway,” recalled Travis Walton on the 40th anniversary of his abduction by an unidentified flying object.

To mark the occasion, Walton hosted a Skyfire Summit UFO conference in Overgaard last weekend.

“I didn’t know how much time had gone by but later found out it was five days and six hours. I was badly injured and could feel the cold of the pavement, but my clothes were warm. I saw the disc shoot off into the sky and then saw the lights of Heber/Overgaard.”

On Nov. 5, 1975, Walton was part of a seven-man logging crew working in the Sitgreaves National Forest near Heber. As they were leaving that night, they all saw a bright light off to their right. When they got closer, they saw a bright saucer-shaped UFO hovering about 20 feet over a clearing.

Walton was the only one who got out of the truck to investigate. […]

It’s been 40 years since that event that has captivated millions for decades. This is the story of Travis Walton. Walton was working with a logging crew that was on its way home.

While driving through the Apache-Stigreaves National Forest, the crew spotted a strange light and some kind of craft hovering overhead. Walton said he approached the craft, a beam of light struck him and he fell unconscious.

Judge Denies Defense Request in Romanek Case

Jack Brewer By Jack Brewer

Stanley Romanek appeared in court Monday morning for a motions hearing. The Loveland, Colo., self-proclaimed alien abductee was arrested February 1, 2014, on two felony counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child stemming from allegations of possessing and distributing child pornography.

LPD Det. Brian Koopman
LPD Det. Brian Koopman
During the latest hearing, Romanek’s attorneys sought access to evidence of criminal charges leveled in another case against Loveland Police Detective Brian Koopman, according to the ‘Loveland Reporter-Herald’. The detective led the search of Romanek’s home in April of 2013 after the Department of Homeland Security reportedly downloaded incriminating files originating from Romanek’s IP address. Koopman has been accused of misconduct in unrelated investigations. Elizabeth McClintock, an attorney representing Romanek, argued the information sought would go towards Koopman’s credibility.

District Attorney Joshua Ritter expressed concerns that the primary rationale presented by the defense was to determine if their client’s constitutional rights were violated. That was not what the trial was going to be about, he added, stating that the relevant question to the jury is whether Romanek possessed and distributed pornographic material of children.

Judge Daniel Kaup denied the defense’s request for information about Koopman. The case against him has yet to be adjudicated, Kaup pointed out, ruling that the court would be overstepping its legal authority to begin questioning and further exploring the relevance of the charges against the detective.

Koopman testified to the court in March that incriminating files were shared using a program called Limewire. A Homeland Security agent reportedly documented evidence of such file sharing from Romanek’s IP in 2008 and 2009.

Romanek purports a “space organization,” as the ‘Reporter-Herald’ termed it, was harassing him and putting “disgusting things” on his computer. This was allegedly due to the UFO-related work he was doing.

Yet another motions hearing will occur prior to a possible jury trial. Watch the case tracking summary to stay informed of court dates.
